First, orotracheal intubation was performed with a no. 9 LMA Fastrach ETT (Teleflex Medical, USA). Once the airway had been secured, the maxillofacial surgeon made a right paramedian submental incision and dissected between the genioglossal, geniohyoid, and anterior digastric muscles until reaching the floor of the mouth. Kocher forceps were then passed through this incision to grasp the orotracheal tube and take it out through the incision. Finally, the orotracheal tube was secured to the skin (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>).<elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia>The main advantage of submental intubation over tracheostomy is that it is associated with only minor, infrequent complications. For this reason, we believe that submental intubation is a good alternative to tracheostomy in patients with complex craniofacial trauma or orthognathic surgery, provided prolonged postoperative intubation is not expected." This is a monthly journal (10 issues) that publishes scientific articles of all areas within its specialty: clinical anesthesia, resuscitation-intensive medicine and critical care, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain, urgent care and emergencies and studies on basic science and related fields. The journal accepts work in both Spanish and English.
