As part of a study into ultrasound for the perioperative evaluation of the airway, we observed a hypoechoic supraglottic mass measuring 17.1<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>×<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>18.9<span class="elsevierStyleHsp" style=""></span>mm in diameter (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>). Given these findings, we proceeded with awake intubation using an Airtraq<span class="elsevierStyleSup">®</span> videolaryngoscope. The procedure was completed without complications. Ultrasound study of the upper airway has proven to be a useful diagnostic tool in advanced airway management, since it can show structures that could cause obstruction or reduce airway permeability.
