Phenotypic and molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolates conducted in nares of psoriatic patients attending a public hospital in Argentina
Carina A. Boncompain, Cristian A. Suárez, Mario Squeff, Valeria Belluzo, Gustavo Piccirilli, Ana Molteni, Ramón A. Fernández Bussy, Héctor R. Morbidoni
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:3-11
Highlights

  • A study on the carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in psoriasis patients is presented.

  • Carriage was higher in the group of psoriasis patients than in the control group.

  • The frequency of isolation was directly related to the severity of the disease.

  • No link of phenotypic or virulence trait of S. aureus to psoriasis was found.

  • Transcriptomics will answer if specific S. aureus genes are linked to psoriasis.

Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:12-9
Highlights

Study of the genetic diversity of Moraxella spp. isolates obtained from corneal abscesses
Karina L. Roitman, Lucía Cipolla, Patricia Minervini, Mónica Prieto
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:20-4
Highlights

  • MALDI-TOF MS is a reliable tool for identifying M. lacunata and M. nonliquefaciens.

  • Using SmaI as restriction enzyme, PFGE is a useful technique for typing Moraxella species.

  • Antibiotic susceptibility testing for M. lacunata is not standardized by the CLSI.

Antimicrobial resistance dissemination associated with intensive animal production practices in Argentina: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Barbara Prack McCormick, María P. Quiroga, Verónica E. Álvarez, Daniela Centrón, Pablo Tittonell
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:25-42
Highlights

  • AMR and multidrug resistance associated with the animal and the production system.

  • Higher prevalence of AMR in swine and chicken, and intensive production.

  • Lower prevalence of AMR in cattle, and in extensive production/family farming.

  • There is a research gap regarding prevalence of AMR in beef-cattle from feedlot.

  • Need for restriction of highest priority antimicrobials in food-producing animals.

Characterization of third generation cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli clinical isolates from Ushuaia, Argentina
Ivan Gramundi, Ezequiel Albornoz, Manuel Boutureira, Melina Rapoport, Sonia Gomez, Alejandra Corso, Gabriel Castro, Diego Faccone
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:43-8
Highlights

  • Characterization of third generation cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli clinical isolates from Ushuaia, Argentina.

  • 32 third generation cephalosporin-resistant E. coli from Ushuaia, Argentina were studied.

  • International high-risk clones ST131, ST617 and ST405 were detected.

  • CTX-M ESBL was the main mechanism of resistance to third generation cephalosporins.

  • Whole genome sequence analysis of 7 MDR E. coli allowed full characterization of these isolates.

Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:49-59
Highlights

  • Epidemiologic and spatial analysis of leptospirosis can be applied in human population.

  • Information about leptospirosis in rural areas is scarce.

  • Preventive measures can be applied for human leptospirosis from rural areas.

Helicobacter pylori infection: A balance between bacteria and host
Pamela Bucci, Yanina Barbaglia, Fabián Tedeschi, Fabián Zalazar
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:60-7
Highlights

  • H. pylori genotypes and SNP-174G>C IL-6 in patients with gastritis were evaluated.

  • More virulent genotypes and -174G/G IL-6 were found in active chronic gastritis IM+.

  • Our results can be useful to identify patients at greater risk for adenocarcinoma.

Ana Rosa Méndez-Cruz, Georgina Elizabeth Félix-Bermúdez, Dinora Virginia Aguilar-Escobar, Lourdes Vega-Vega, Aurea Itzel Morales-Estrada, Araceli Contreras-Rodríguez
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:68-72
Highlights

  • R. corynebacterioides is considered as an opportunistic pathogen in humans.

  • R. corynebacterioides is underestimated as cause of bacteremia in cancer patients.

  • 16S rRNA sequence analysis confirmed the identification of R. corynebacterioides.

Clostridioides difficile: Characterization of the circulating toxinotypes in an Argentinean public hospital
Andrea N. Crivaro, Paula Carasi, Ileana Salto, Ayelen Hugo, P. Cecilia Soldavini Pelichotti, Agustina Bengoa, Melisa Fragomeno, María A. Serradell, ... Fernando M. Trejo
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2023;55:73-82
Highlights

  • Toxinotypes 0, I and VIII circulate in the same hospital.

  • Toxinotype VIII is the most prevalent.

  • Occurrence of toxinotype I (one isolate) is compatible with the introduction of microorganisms from external sources.

  • Isolates associated to fatal outcomes (GCD13, GCD14 and GCD22) are situated in regions of the biplots related to altered laboratory values at admission.
