In science Francis Crick and James D. Watson discovered the helical structure of DNA, Dr Jonas Salk designed the polio vaccine, and the first living donor kidney transplant was performed in Paris. In Nepal, climbers Tenzing Norgay and Edmund P. Hillary were the first humans to reach the summit of Everest, and on 2 June Elizabeth II was crowned in Westminster Abbey. The blockade of Spain was easing. Although the Soviet dictator Stalin died in Moscow at the beginning of the year, both the USSR and the USA conducted numerous atomic bomb tests in Semipalatinsk and Nevada in relentless escalation. The Korean War was still raging, and in many parts of the world the political situation was taking a turn, the consequences of which we are still suffering. At the end of the year, in the USA, RCA introduced the first colour television set to the market. As a “pharmacological” anecdote for that year, in Havana, the Cuban singer Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera recorded the bembé "Burundanga".

This issue marks the end of the 70th anniversary celebrations of SEDAR and REDAR. We have already celebrated previous anniversaries3–5 and other journals in our specialty are also celebrating their respective anniversaries, such as Anesthesia Analgesia (100 years in 2022) and the British Journal of Anaesthesia (100 years in 2023).6,7 Since these beginnings, I would like to highlight the work of the successive editors and, by extension, of the deputy editors - when there were any - and the editorial board and reviewer panel members, because this was always hard work that was never well-recompensed or valued, and entailed a great deal of time and dedication. In high-impact journals, these positions have usually been made professional and dedication is exclusive. This was never the case at REDAR. From the editorial perspective, we progressed from managing articles on paper and sending them by post until the start of "computerisation", sending information on CDs and DVDs, until, well into the 2000s, we started using the Editorial Manager platform. Readers can imagine the transfer from one editorial team to the next of hundreds of articles on paper (with dozens of standard photographs if the articles had images) with their corresponding revisions, also on paper, and the transfer of all this correspondence by surface mail. Although the journal's articles since 1967 can be found, at least partially, in PubMed (Fig. 1, online), as the journal evolved, obtaining an impact factor (Impact factor, IF, assigned by Clarivate analytics, formerly ISI Thompson) emerged as one of the main objectives. This meant that the journal would expand its influence, its readership, its citations, and, ultimately, that the research of Spanish anaesthesiologists and others would have the dissemination they deserved. All the directors (see Annex online) and their teams fought for this objective, since it was established as a standard, and it has finally been obtained -IF 1.3 in 2023 (with assignment from 2022) under the leadership of Dr Carlos Ferrando.
<elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia>
In this editorial article I am not going to dwell on how a manuscript can be published in REDAR.
