The optimism effect on country productivity and innovation activities
Daniel Mahn, Cong Wang, Danielle Kent, Chris Heaton
Highlights

  • The study examines whether the link between optimism and innovation and productivity outcomes translates from a micro (individual) level to a macro (economic) level.

  • The results suggest that optimism in an economy supports an increase in innovation activity but not an increase in innovation outcomes.

  • Using consumer and business confidence as measures of optimism, producer optimism has a 33 % greater impact on a country's aggregate productivity level than does consumer optimism.

  • When the sample is separated by income level, medium-income countries benefit more from an optimistic setting than do high-income countries.
